Living spaces are more personal these days with the items that we collect. For those with communication and memory organisational difficulties the layout and choice of items needs to be inclusive of both regulatory needs and also a reflection of how that individual spends their time and what they like to think about and interact with. There is more choice these days in what is commercially available. An Occupational Therapists experience is helpful in designing room layout and choice of items to help promote social interaction with carers, to help promote reduced isolation and to support developmental progress towards self help goals.
Eg. More age appropriate design features for older teens and young adults / adults with complex support needs – bed signage for over their bed within a group home.
E.g. Bedroom organisation for multiple hats for those who need to protect themselves outdoors with constant wearing of sunglasses and hats.
E.g. For those individuals with temperature regulation difficulties or who need lots of things to drink or eat. A personal fridge for the bedroom.
